Purple Gidgee Timber

Updated: Jun 13

Purple Gidgee – One of Australia’s Rarest and Most Remarkable Timbers

At The Woodcraft Gallery, we are privileged to occasionally showcase pieces crafted from one of Australia's most extraordinary native timbers — Purple Gidgee (Acacia crombiei).

Highly sought after by collectors, woodturners, and timber enthusiasts, Purple Gidgee is considered one of the rarest and densest timbers in the world. Native only to the arid inland regions of Queensland, this remarkable species is renowned for its exceptional hardness, natural durability, and its breathtaking transformation into a rich royal purple colour.

Nature’s Purple Masterpiece

One of the most fascinating characteristics of Purple Gidgee is its unique colour development. When freshly cut, the timber displays soft brown and muted purple tones. However, exposure to natural daylight triggers a remarkable reaction within the wood, gradually deepening the colour into a stunning royal purple that continues to evolve over time.

The result is a timber unlike any other found in nature.

Many hand-turned bowls also retain sections of the contrasting golden sapwood around the outer edge, creating a dramatic visual frame that beautifully highlights the vibrant purple heartwood within.

Exceptionally Rare

Purple Gidgee is not only beautiful — it is exceptionally scarce.

The trees naturally grow relatively small, making it difficult to obtain timber large enough to create substantial bowls from a single solid piece. Additionally, the species is recognised as vulnerable, making responsibly sourced timber increasingly rare.

For woodturners, finding a suitable blank large enough to produce a bowl can be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

A Challenge for Master Craftsmen

Purple Gidgee is famous for its extreme density and hardness. Weighing approximately 1,385 kilograms per cubic metre when dry, it ranks amongst the hardest timbers on Earth.

Its density creates significant challenges during the turning process. Cutting tools lose their edge quickly, and every piece requires patience, skill, and precision. Yet the reward is extraordinary.

When carefully finished and polished, Purple Gidgee develops an almost glass-like surface that feels smooth, luxurious, and incredibly solid in the hand.

A True Collector’s Timber

Unlike mass-produced timber products, Purple Gidgee bowls are typically handcrafted as one-of-a-kind artworks. Each piece displays unique grain patterns, colour variations, and natural characteristics that cannot be replicated.

Because of the rarity of suitable timber, large bowls are seldom available. Most pieces are produced in limited quantities by specialist Australian artisans and offered through select galleries and timber collectors.

For those fortunate enough to acquire a Purple Gidgee bowl, ownership extends beyond functionality. These pieces become treasured heirlooms, admired for both their craftsmanship and their connection to one of Australia's most remarkable native timbers.

Available at The Woodcraft Gallery

From time to time, The Woodcraft Gallery is fortunate to source handcrafted Purple Gidgee pieces from talented Australian woodturners. Whether displayed as a statement piece in the home or gifted as a special keepsake, Purple Gidgee remains one of the most distinctive and admired timbers in our collection.

Its rarity, beauty, and extraordinary natural colour ensure that every piece tells a uniquely Australian story.
